FAQ for ILSTUDIA
- Who can use these images?
Anyone can view the data, but image use is restricted to ISU faculty, staff and students. Offsite access is available with a VPN client. Download the Cisco VPN client for either Windows or Macintosh from the University Computer Help Desk (http://www.ilstu.edu/helpdesk/index.shtml)
- Can I download the images to use in the classroom or for studying?
Yes - you may download the images to your "My favorites" folder on the ILSTUDIA site, or to your own files.
What are the copyright restrictions?
Rights pertain to the original sources and the digital images. You must apply fair use principles to the use of copyright materials. The images may be used for educational purposes only: study, teaching, scholarly research. They may not be downloaded, copied, retained, printed, shared, modified or otherwise distributed except as provided for by permitted educational uses. They may not be re-published in any way, including mounted on an unrestricted web site.
For more on the fair use principles and copyright see:
- What software can be used to show images in the classroom?
You can use ILSTUDIA's Slide Viewer tool for presentations using a direct internet connection. For "offline" presentations use Powerpoint or an image viewer such as iPhoto (Mac) or Fax and Picture Viewer (Windows).
- How can faculty use the images in web pages for student review?
In "My favorites" scroll down to "save as web page." Any web pages must be restricted to ISU access.
- How do I find more tips on using the website?
See the Help pages linked from all Milner digital collections. Note about "cookies": you must clear all cookies from your web browser if you want to return to the default search results display (artist, titles and date in a grid) after altering display preferences. Also, you cannot access a "my favorites" file from more than one computer because it uses cookies. But you can save a "my favorites" file in a directory outside of the ILSTUDIA browser.
- Where did these images come from?
The images in ILSTUDIA are from many sources, including unique slides scanned from the collection in ISU's School of Art, recently published images, and wherever possible, original images purchased or donated along with rights for educational use. For more information see ILSTUDIA Image Collection Acquisitions Policies and Procedures.
How soon will more images be available?
More images will be added regularly. Cataloging information will also be updated. Note any image numbers you want to find again (e.g. "051407sj") in case the cataloging description is revised later.
- Can anyone contribute images to the database?
If you are interested in contributing images to the database please contact Janet Connelly (jbconne@ilstu.edu), Virginia Kerr (vkerr@ilstu.edu) or Kathleen Lonbom (klonbom@ilstu.edu). Images must be at least 300 dpi, 24 bit color, TIFF file format. Minimal cataloging information must be provided for each image - a form is available. Preference will be given to images for which all rights are held by the contributor.
